Does anyone know why iTunes uses so much CPU power when updating podcasts from the Internet?

On a dual processor G5, iTunes uses over 100% CPU for a minute or so when I launch it, while it automatically updates my podcast subscriptions. It causes the G5 fans to rev up strongly for a while.

What is so processor-intensive in this ???????
PowerMac G5 2,3Ghz double processor
4 Go RAM; X800XT video card; Raptor boot drive
