I tried downloading Windows Media Player for OSX off the Microsoft website. Apparently, the files downloads as a "Stuff It". Or whatever its called. Microsoft sends me to the website and it seems as though I need to pay in order to download the program that reads those types of files. Is there any other way to download Windows Media Player?

I would search a download site (say macupdate.com or versiontracker.com) for flip4mac. Microsoft no longer makes windows media player for the mac themselves instead they bought they bought the right to flip4mac making the basic version free.

http://www.stuffit.com/mac/index.html

StuffIt Expander is free. You only need to pay for the version that creates the archives, not for the one that expands them.

Anyway, Microsoft's Windows Media Player is a horrible application and discontinued. You would be better off with Filp4Mac (doesn't work with Intel Macs yet).

Windows Media Player (on any platform) is slightly better than nothing Right now it's playing some of my MP3s while I study using my PC laptop. I would not use it to encode anything, in part because MS has this thing about collecting details about user identity and such when using certain parts of the program (at least on the PC version). And it's kind of bloated for what I use it for.

Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of WMP-capable players out there, so if you have a .wmv file to play, you don't have a lot of choices for what to play it on. I haven't seen Flip4Mac yet (my wife uses the Mac at home and doesn't let me touch it much ), but ANYTHING will help.

WMP is dead on a Mac. Use flip4Mac.

As others have pointed out, WiMP is officially dead on the Mac. Instead, Microsoft has entered into a cross-licensing agreement with the developers of Flip4Mac, a QuickTime plug-in which lets you play Windows media files in QuickTime. The free version is very nice.

It doesn't work on Intel macs natively yet, but from what I can understand, it works under Rosetta. The Universal Binary version should come out soon.

Oh ok. Then that's fine. Its not like I use it that often. I just want to be able to see .wmv files.

Have a look for Popwire. You will find in on MacUpdate. It is supposed to work on Intel Macs and does much the same job as Flip4Mac.
