Sure. Go to iTunes Preferences > Advanced > iTunes music folder location, and choose the folder on your external drive where you want to store your files. Make sure that the "copy files to iTunes music folder..." box is checked.

Silly question perhaps, but is it possible to have two computers connected to one external drive? I'm thinking in terms of having an iTunes library on the external and two computers having access to it.

This isn't possible with a normal USB/Firewire external drive. For something like this you would have to get a Networked Attached Storage (NAS) drive like this.

Yes, it is.
He can just enable AFP on the computer to which the external drive is attached, and then he can mount it via the network from the client.

True. That wasn't what came to my mind when I read "connected," though. But it's a good idea. The main drawback is it would require the host computer to be on for the other computer to access the drive.

Short of buying new hardware (like you suggested), it's his only real option.
Personally, after messing with a unified iTunes library among a few machines, I gave up on the idea. The XML database and actual files get out of sync rather quickly if more than one copy of iTunes has the database open at any one point.

No, that isn't possible. The second port is to daisy-chain additional Firewire devices.

It's to chain-link multiple Firewire devices. You can't connect two machines to it.

I'm using a SimpleShare NAS for storing my iTunes library and it is working out just fine for sharing the library. I have it plugged into my wireless router, so its wirelessly shared.

Than maybe you could place the iTunes library folder on the external drive and afterwards create a symbolic link to it, from each of the computers.
