classic startup:
ive got os 9.1, and it seems to have loaded, but it says it: cant update files in 'system folder'
because its read-only.
im the only user on this machine and ive tryed 'authenticating' in the netinfo bit, but that doesent help....
anyone got any ideas how to get this thing going please?

do a get info on the system folder and check what the permissions are set to.

it says ownership7permissions: Read only
owner:system
group: wheel....

i cant seem to change ownership+permissions for some reason, how do i manage that?

Well clearly "read only" is the problem.

Click the lock and change the setting. It will ask you to authenticate.

ive tryed that, but is says i dont have sufficient privileges?
can i put os9 on a different partition? how do i do that?
sorry but im very new to mac's

When it tells you you don't have sufficient privileges, click the "authenticate" button.

cheers wataru, ive sorted the privileges bit out now, but im getting:
"The system software on the startup disk only functions on the origonal media, not if copyed to another drive...restart"
im getting more and more lost at i go...cheers for the help chaps

It seems its been cdragged accross from a OS 9 boot CD - i.e. its a special System folder just to boot from a CD. You will need to use a "full" OS 9 System Folder.
I free'd my mind... now it won't come back.
