I have moved up to final cut pro from low-end pc software recently. I have been reading books and using fcp to edit but theres one thing that bugs me.
In fcp i have been doing log and capture, setting the in and out and name of every individual clip. While this might be helpful for commercial firms with many people, all it does for me is slow down progress! In consumer nle's you can get the software to scene detect and catalog a whole tape for you.
Please tell me fcp is capable of this?
Thanks!

Speaking of books...
If you really want to get the most out of Final Cut, I would highly recommend getting the Apple Pro Training Series books (3 total for FCP) from peachpit press. You can find them rather cheap on amazon. I didn't know about these books until a few months ago and really wish I had something like them when I first started learning Final Cut a few years ago.

I know the basics of FCP (ie capturing, cutting, transitions, etc.). Would these books be worth it for me? I'd definitely like to learn more

Absolutely.
I've been editing in Final Cut for the last couple of years, and have found these books to be an extremely valuable resource.
