Hi everyone...new guy here! Not only am I new to the forum, I'm a new mac user! Ive been trying to find programs to replace the programs I tyically use on Windows. Can anyone recommend an all-encompassing archiving utility, one that supports the largest number of archive types? Particularly, I need one that does well with .zip files. I d/led Stuffit Expander, but it always break when trying to unzip a zip file...any ideas?

Also, I need a good d/l manager. I use to use FlashGet with Windows. I'm looking for something with the same sort of functionality. Any recs?

I guess as a wrap-up, can anyone also recommend any sites that host a lot of good Mac freeware? Thanks for your time!!!

The OS handles both creating and expanding .zip files just fine.

What do you need a download manager for? I've never used one.

Look at the sticky thread in this forum for freeware.

Stuffit (including the free Expander) handles more compressed file types than any other utility.

I don't use d/l managers very often, but they are extremely handy when you need to download multiple files off of a single page. There is a nice integration between FF and Flashget on windows that allows you to simply right click and download as many of the files on the page that you want. They also help accelerate d/ls for big files. Recently, I've been d/ling a lot of bigger files (e.g., boot camp) so having that acceleration would be nice.

As far as the .zip files are concerned, I guess I just got a bad batch of .zip files. I'll have to try another .zip and see what I get. Thanks for the input so far!

Download managers for OS X: Speed Download and iGetter are the ones that come to mind. I personally hate Speed Download, it caused more problems than it solved. For those times I REALLY need a download manager (rarely) I use iGetter.

Stuffit/Stuffit Expander handles the widest variety of compressed archives.
