Someone help please. I need a DVD Decrypter for Mac that will let you copy retail DVD's onto other DVD-R's. This is urgent, and I can't use DVD2OneX because it only lasts 30 days, I need a free one! Any suggestions?

You can try Mac The Ripper. DVD2OneX isn't actually a ripper, if I recall. It doesn't decode DVDs, so you need a ripping program to use it anyway. Of course, most commercial DVDs these days are dual-layer, so they won't fit on a normal DVD-R even if you rip them. That's where DVD2OneX comes in -- it shrinks them down to the size of one DVD-R.

MacTheRipper will rip DVDs for you, it just won't reencode them.

1. use mactheripper to copy the movies to your hard drive.
2. use DVD2oneX to compress the movies so they fit on a DVD-R.

I tried MacTheRipper and thats not decrypting it either, it'll decrypt the first 2 .VOB's, than when it gets to the 3rd one it stops and says "ERROR: MacTheRipper can not decrypt the rest of the disk"

You may have a newer disc that has special copy protection on it. You may have to get the latest beta version (available only by donating to the developer) from the forums at RipDifferent.

"Special copy protection"?!? Yeah, uh, and how, pray tell, is it then compatible with all existing DVD players? The DVD encryption hasn't changed, and the physical format hasn't changed either.

relax. read what has been posted.

question, if its that urgent to get a copy of the dvd, why didnt you just buy a second copy it would have been cheaper than paying $30 to copy one dvd. unless you are planning on copying more than one dvd or you are copying a rare and expensive dvd?

I meant new copy protection methods such as RipGuard. The older version of MacTheRipper can't deal with them.

Hm, I hadn't heard of that. I'm not quite sure how one would implement new copy protection on "closed" systems like DVD.

They are basically distortions of the spec that are legal DVDs, but they do things that confuse rippers and still play in DVD players.

See the MacTheRipper forums for more info. Basically, if there weren't any new copy protection methods, version 3.0 of MTR would be out by now.

I finally fouund out how to do it!! MacTheRipper DOES work, there were just some prefrences I had to fix. Than after that, I used "DVD Remaster" to convert it from 7GB to 4GB. And than I just used "Burn folder" to burn the folder to a disk Thanks to all who helped me. And I am glad I finally found a program that works: DVD Remaster! Does anyone else know this program? It's a GREAT program!

I'm pretty sure DVD Remaster is in fact just like DVD2oneX! Ah well! Infact there would have been no need for DVD remaster - Dvd2onex would have worked, but obviously he wasn't interested in using the program he bought!

Use Mactheripper to make a VIDEO_TS folder, then use Toast to burn the disc.

Get the MacTheRipper Version 3. It is in beta but it works perfect to decrypt them. You can then use a program like Roxio Toast or Popcorn to compress and burn them to a disk. Since you have DVD2One you can compress it to 4.7gb and then use the disk utility in Mac OS to burn it to a disk.

I myself use MacTheRipper 3.0b and then burn and compress using Toast 7. Great combination!

You should know that this will not create a valid DVD Video disc, because it doesn't use the UDF file system. Some DVD players will play it anyway (apparently yours is one), but it's not guaranteed to play on any other set top player because it is out of spec.

It seems that ffmpegX can author you a disk image, which you should be able to burn with Disk Utility. But if your DVD player plays what you have, what is the problem? If you're trying to duplicate commercial DVDs for sale or something, you're in the wrong forum, and the least you could do is be less demanding and petulant.

Toast comes for free with many burners as an OEM version, but as I recall (from around version 4 or so when I got that version) it didn't include advance features, of which burning UDF format is one.

No. Toast is not free. Therefore there is no such thing as "the FREE toast".
What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

This thread was started three months ago. Three months and you're still having trouble making a dup of a DVD?

Bottom line: Download a copy of MacTheRipper (which you've done) and buy Roxio's Toast 7. Its almost all you'll need. For certain newer Sony studio DVDs, you may need to use DVD2OneX (which you've already bought) to remove any zero-length cells that come up. Details can be found at the forums at RipDifferent.com.

And don't break the law.

I suggest you follow the advice given by many users here and read a bit before any more all-caps ranting and raving posts.

I know this is rarely ever mentioned because of price, but FastDVDCopy is a great program that works with the click of one button. You pop in a dvd, press the button, it rips it, shrinks it, and as soon as you put another disc in it burns it for you. Simple as that.
However, it does cost $100, but I've had this program for about 2 and a half years now, it's worked great and followed me from machine to machine. I think it was worth it.

Follow the instructions at the MacTheRipper Forums. Only people who donate get access to the beta. When it's no longer beta, it will be released to the general public.

Their Ad for this program says "Copy your DVD videos with one click". But it doesn't mention copying encrypted DVD movies. Does it? Does it decrypt them?

See tooki's disclaimer above-there are few LEGAL reasons to copy copy-protected DVDs, and the official stance of MacNN and these forums is that, beyond fair use, we will not support, enable, or condone copying copyrighted material. Piracy is bad and we don't help anyone do it.

Now for the flip side-I bought a DVD recorder to convert home movies on VHS to DVD. Problem: the DVD recorder produces typical DVDs, including the encryption. At least they're region 0! So in my case, if I want to reproduce the video of my son's high school graduation for relatives all over the U.S., I need to either use a DVD ripper that copies encrypted discs, or use a tool to create an unencrypted version and burn that version. THIS is the best example of the ambiguity of current U.S. law on this issue-using available equipment, I CANNOT produce an unencrypted version of MY OWN WORK, so I MUST use a tool like MactheRipper to allow me to make MY OWN COPIES OF MY OWN WORK. See the BIG difference between copying commercial DVDs and copying DVDs of your own creation?
