Perhaps you'd care to enlighten us with your "work-around".

i'm talking aboot apple's once pure os ethos being spoilt by a bizaare windows driven desire to fit every feature imaginable in

too many choices mess things up for the end user imo , don't you find ?

i just want to be able to do this:-

1. put tape in video

2. press play on video

3. capture video

4. put on dvd

5. burn dvd

6. watch on tv

unfortunately i'm given 25+ choices , sub menus , god knows what just to do a simple task like this

is toast a lot simpler ?

Since Toast doesn't have video capture abilities, my guess is no. What you will need to do is to get the analog VHS footage into digital before you can do much else. There are Firewire analog -> digital converters, but I hear they can be expensive; you can use a DV camera, taping first to DV tape from your VCR, then transferring it to iMovie/FCX; you might also be able to do it much more easily with a combined VHS/DVD recorder (though that might also cost a bit).

Actually, I find the many choices add plenty of flexibility. In fact, with the proper equipment, you will find that capturing video in iMovie, then burning that video to DVD in iDVD can be really easy. As Jacke mentioned, what you need to accomplish this task is a little device known as a DV Converter.

Connect the vcr to the DV converter...connect the converter to the Mac...capture in iMovie...export to iDVD...burn.

I think it's foolish to blame iLife when the problem lies with a lack of hardware or improper equipment.

Just cuz it wasn't the tool you wanted doesn't make it "crap". Obviously it's a suite that works well for a LOT of people.

Anyhow, I bet iMovie and Magic iDVD would have done it for you, had you taken the time to learn anything at all about the product you have.
