So when I search in limewire, it finds files and everything fine, but then when Iclick on them to download them nothing seems to happen. This is the case whether I double click, click the download button, or right click and then click download or download as. What's going on here? I have tried several versions of limewire.

Not that this will necessarily fix your problem, but try a Limewire derivative like Cabos instead. Limewire itself is a piece of sh*t.

Amen. It brings my computer to a crawl, I cannot even type in another application while it is open, the GUI is awkward and recently, its network has been flooded with bogus files from the RIAA or music label. First we saw the appearance of [sponsored result] with a file size of 134.4 kb, then we saw the annoying "Can you afford 0.99$? LEGAL MP3 DOWNLOAD" and now, the insult on the injury, tons of fake files which seems "legit" but that can't be downloaded. They are of different bit rate and file size, and there are about 100 of each. Really annoying...

I've had and still have lots of success with the gnutella network, which Limewire uses. That's why I recommended another gnutella client, Cabos. My beef is with Limewire itself, not the network.

To be fair, that's not Limewire's fault. That's just the record companies' droogies work to make downloading a pain.
That said, Limewire itself is a buggy mess that crashes with alarming frequency.

It ain't the record companies fault. It's Limewire. It sucks up resources like nobody's business. Like so many torrent and similar sharing system clients, it's more concerned about sharing OUT than downloading. What's probably happening when "nothing happens" is that Limewire is figuring out how to best use YOUR system to share what you want to download to other people. It's also trying to maximize your UPLOAD bandwidth-which minimizes your download bandwidth. Didn't someone earlier say "it sucks?" It does so literally as well as figuratively. You may be able to configure your client to conform to specific upload and download bandwidth limits, but you really shouldn't have to. This truly sucks.

Ditch LimeWire and use Acquisition. It uses the same network, but isn't buggy.

Acquisition is the worst nagware known to man, and the developer is extremely shady (see comments on MacUpdate). Like I said before, use Cabos. It's based on Limewire (just like Acquisition) but it's completely free.

Agreed, Acquisition's nagging is bad and getting worse. But the app itself works beautifully. I'll read the comments and check out Cabos.

Unfortunately it looks like almost every client starts nice and goes downhill. Limewire is the exception in that it started out poor and never got better. There's even a version for Windows that has a trojan built in so you get infected before you get any files! Limewire=bad. Acquisition was one I almost downloaded until I heard that they went from an early (quiet) version to a newer (very naggy) version. Too bad-it has such good reviews on its functionality.
