I remember reading about a program shortly after the first universal apps showed up that would allow you to either remove the PPC code or x86 code from a binary to strip it down to the architecture you needed. Anyone know the name of this program and where I can get it?

Be careful not to strip your system libraries like Delocalizer does.

Huh? I thought only Monolingual did that. Anyway, yeah. Watch out for these "space-saving" utilities, as they will strip the PPC code out of every library and framework on the system, with the result being that if you're on an Intel Mac, the Rosetta emulation environment will no longer work at all.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Read my post above. Monolingual will completely disable Rosetta if you have an Intel Mac. Whatever you do, do not run Monolingual unless you want to do an Archive and Install to fix the damage it causes.

Run Monolingual to get rid of the extra languages, but don't get rid of any binaries, since you will break stuff that way. But you can delete only languages, so using it for that is fine.

I would love to see how much you really save doing this. IMHO, if you need to use this application, you have other problems

I tried one of those "trimming" apps. Langauge specific. Everything looked as though it worked. Speaking English, I opted to remove all other languages. Unfortunately, after running the utility and firing up Spotlight, the results were in Japanese.

I've learned to stop messing with those system wide clean up utitlies. If you're really itching to lighten the HD usage, you could go into individual apps and remove the extra iproj folders in languages other than whatever you need. The risk is yours.

hahahaahah, i jus fcuked up my mbp w/ Monolingual lol. I removed all languages except English and Chinese, but also removed all the other universal binaries. Now i gotta re-install OSX w/ system files intact -_-; Oh, btw, removing the binaries saves about 750 MBs.

Yes. Monolingual defaults to stripping all universal binaries everywhere in the system. It's not documented, and people are really getting screwed with it.

What's even worse is that the author of Monolingual has known about the massive destruction his app causes for months now, and he still hasn't fixed it (or even just disabled the "remove architectures" feature to stop the damage).

I wonder how many one-star review on VersionTracker it's going to take before he decides to fix this?
