I have come across a pretty big problem when using Safari. I am getting the following error:

----------------------------------------------
Bad Request

Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand.
Reason: You're speaking plain HTTP to an SSL-enabled server port.
Instead use the HTTPS scheme to access this URL, please.
----------------------------------------------

I get it when I try to log into my bank's website for online banking. I also get it when trying to log in to other passworded sites. FWIW, I do see the little "lock" icon in the upper right corner of Safari, indicating SSL layers, no?

I also can't access my hotmail account. I try to sign in and when I press "Log In" it sits there for a while and then gives me a “lost network connection” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1005) error.

I haven't had any problems previously, I left town for about a week on vacation and when I get back I start having these problems. Did not perform any OS updates via software update in the meantime. I have all the latest patches from Software Update (except the most recent Quicktime update), btw, running Tiger.

Anyone know what is up? I don't think it's a problem with the sites I am trying to access as hotmail is very reliable, and I get the "Bad Request" error at two different sites. Also don't think it's an ISP problem because I also tried visiting a particular site from my library over their wireless network and got the same result.

Strange? And very frustrating!!!

Does your URL start with http:// or https:// ?

If the former, try it with the latter.

They start with https. Remember, I was using these very same bookmarked links just a short while ago with no problems. Why the sudden change, and on whose end is it changing?

Some more insight:

I have seen this behavior while connected to the internet via 2 different ISPs, but only with my mac. That, combined with the fact that I see the same error on 2 independent SSL websites, leads me to believe that it is my Safari that is causing the problem. Somethng must have gotten corrupted in my Safari, however strange that sounds.

Is there a way to "restore" or "reinstall" Safari?

I have a backup hard disk with a bootable copy of my OS X at home. I will try booting from it and using the safari app there. If it works, would I be able to just copy the Safari.app from the backup to my Powerbook, overwriting the one that is there?
