Hello.

Please excuse the simple question.

I am a recent convert to the world of Mac, and my new Macbook has become the center of my digital world. I have recently ordered a mac mini and hope to set it up as a media server on my network. As it will be "sans keyboard or Mouse" I though that I'd remotely control it from my macbook.

Can someone confirm for me if there is remote destop software build into OS X? Or would it be better for me to download something like VNC?

I imagine that my usage will be pretty simple, copying CD's, downloading music etc so I guess that I dont need a "professional" app...

Any help would greatly help me out.

Thanks for your time.

The Apple Remote Desktop framework is part of every Tiger install. However, the Remote Desktop program that gives you a GUI to observe remote machines is an additional product that you have to buy from Apple. But don't worry. It's not really necessary. Here's the deal:

On the mini:
- go to System Prefs > Sharing
- give the mini a name like 'MyMini'
- select Remote Desktop
- choose a user account to log in with
- select 'VNC viewers may control screen with password:'
- enter a password
- click 'OK'

On the MB:
- download Chicken of the VNC (it's a UB and it's free)
- start the program
- in 'Host' enter your mini's name (something like 'MyMini.local')
- in 'Password' enter the password you chose on the mini
- hit 'Connect'

That's it. Good luck and have fun!

Is this possible to remote connect to computers in a completely different location? My parents live in Georgia, and I am in New Joisey. It would be a great help if I could to this to troubleshoot thier issues when they call me.
