On my 2x2.3 Ghz PowerMac G5, Quicktime plays 1080i HD movies fine. (Example: the BBC trailers on Apple's site)

However, the same movies cannot play with VLC 8.5. The video plays very badly, but the sound is OK.

Is this normal? Is anybody else having the same problems?

This is normal - the Apple codecs are much more optimized for the G5 than VLC's.
