I've been searching on this but can't find an answer.

My specs: OS X 10.4.6, Firefox 1.5.0.4

I set Firefox to be my default browser (tried both just letting firefox do it and setting it in the Safari menu). But Safari keeps popping up in certain cases anyway. For instance, in Mail if I highlight text and choose "Search in Google" it uses Safari instead of Firefox.

So how do I really make Firefox the default browser?

For extra credit: How do I get OS X stuff like "Search in Spotlight" or "Lookup in DIctionary" in the dropdown menu for highlighted text in Firefox?

Thanks.

You don't get stuff like "Search in Spotlight" or "Lookup in Dictionary" into the contextual menu of Firefox. Unless you get the source code and implement the required text access events yourself.

The "Search in Google" service in the Services menu is a service of Safari and as such only works with Safari. This is normal. The same command in the contextual menu would not be necessarily linked to Safari. That it is can be considered an OS bug.

Yes, I noticed, that's why I asked! I should have been more clear, I'm wondering if anyone knows of a Firefox plugin to do that. Sorry.

So what you are saying is that basically there is no way to really make a non-Safari browser be the default for other applications? Or is there a way to edit the services menu?

Thanks.

The default browser setting can be found in Safari's preferences. But a service offered by Safari, such as the "lookup in Google" service, will of course open Safari, not your default browser. There probably exists a third-party implementation of this kind of functionality that does use the default browser, though.
