Hi there,

Does anyone know if Microsoft plans to release a UB version of their MSN Messenger? I use Adium at the moment but its just not as good as the real deal - for me at least!

So does anyone know if and when they are going get the UB version of MSN out? - the PPC version on my Macbook Pro is too sluggish for me!

There are native alternatives such as Fire and Adium. I personally use Adium and I'm very happy with it. Since the Mac version has never supported video and audio chats, there is no reason for me to use MS' official client.

Yeah I already said that I use Adium at the moment. I have come from 10 years of using a PC to a Mac and I have always used MSN Messenger on the PC. I like the MSN for Mac but its not UB.

Adium and Fire are essentially the equivalents of Trillian.

Adium has more features than MSN Mac messenger, so there's no reason to use MSN really (especially if you're coming from a PC, where MSN is much better).

You can make Adium more like MSN with the emoticons packs and message views etc.

What 3rd party alternatives support file transfers 100% though?

For what it's worth, you can customize Adium until a UB of MSN messenger is released. Have you tried that?

(And no, we don't know when it will be released )

MSN messenger for mac is horrid. Besides, I swear I remember M$ saying that along with Windows Media Player for Mac, they were also dropping support for Messenger for Mac

I dunno what it is about MSN Messenger I like. I think jsut after using it on the PC for years I have just got set in my ways. Adium is nice don't get me wrong, it just seems so bleh, dunno.

Certain things I miss - and really they are only small things, but they are the things that make me feel comfortable using it :-

I like that I can have my Online and Offline contacts showing at once, and that they are grouped by online and offline status, where as adium shows them all muddled up together.

I cannot tell whether someone is blocked or not from looking at the contact list on adium. Infact there is no real way of checking a block status at all - unless you rght click on their name.

There are probably other things but I cannot be bothered thinking about them. If anyone knows how to solve them points then please feel free to let me know!

I really do hope that MS bring out a UB version of Messenger that has all features that the PC version has -Webcam, Better Smilee Support, voice chat etc.

You could give AMSN a try, it has many more features that the microsoft version (webcam, those huge smilies etc). It's a bit clunky, but if your Mac is new it should be ok.

Yes, During Macworld 2006, Microsoft said that they are working on a Universal Binary of Office and Microsoft Messenger.

As I thought, you haven't really looked at Adium

Go to the menu View > Sort By Status. That should take care of it. You can also customize Sort By Status by selecting the appropriate point in the menu.

If you have more of these small annoyances, chances are pretty good they can be solved within Adium.

Ohhhhh Mr. CookieMonsterMan....

I was aware of this, HOWEVER.... When you sort by status it then sorts your online contacts into status of Online/away/Busy etc - not alphabetically!.

As I said, you have to customize your Sort By Status. On the bottom of the corresponding dialog, you merely have to check the box `sort alphabetically within each group'. You can group all unavailable contacts either separately or together, etc.

You simply have to take the time to explore the preferences a little

As I said, Adium is infinitely customizable and the chances that it has the settings you want are nowhere near zero

I'm still working on omniscience
However, I would advise you to play with the preferences a bit yourself. There are various themes and you can download more or create your own. The Address Book integration is very nice. If you add the screen names to your Address Book, the names are displayed instead of the screen names (if you want ). Furthermore if you have pictures for a person in an address book, you might use that as well to identify a person.

Adium is very good, except for file transfers. I don't do much file transfer that way so it doesn't bother me. So as a pure chatting client, nothing beats Adium.

Then again the kids these days think that text-only is so 90's

Personally I like iChat and jabber. I think Adium is too ugly.

I think iChat is way, way too bloated. I have a very minimal configuration for Adium which works very nicely, contains most info as a mouse-over and is unobtrusive. This is reason alone for not using iChat. But this, as most things in life, is personal taste

Buddy list sports iPhoto theme with "Metal" layout. Message view displays Renkoo theme.
Also, soundset is Ambience. I almost puke when I hear that duck orgasm.

If you like this config, I can send the files to you.

Ok I have another one for you.

Multi Chats (where more then one person is in the same converstation) is pretty much impossible on Adium. Well I say impossible, at least its impossible for me to initiate a chat and invite more then one person in. I start with person A, then invite person B, but when person B joins, person A is kicked out.

Explain that one then Adium lovers!
