I just reformatted, and before, Safari would underline (in red) mispelled words, but now it no longer does this. Is there a way to activate this? Thanks!

Right click in a text field and go through the Spelling submenu to make sure "Check Spelling As You Type..." is checked.

You don't need to context-click. The same command is in the Edit menu.
