I download an .avi file and neither quicktime not windows media player will open the file.
I have quicktime sett as the default to play this file type.
Every time I download one I get the same message "Error opening movie" "the movie could not be opened'. No other explanation.
Any suggestions here?
I appreciate any and all responses thanks

Do a search for codec. There are tons of threads on this.

Download Flip4Mac, and the DivX decoder. They're both free, and between the two of these you should be able to decode most .avi files within Quicktime.
If you're on an Intel Mac, download the Flip4Mac 2.1 universal beta (and the DivX decoder).

AVI is a container format, not a codec. An AVI file, like a QuickTime .mov, can contain many types of media. QuickTime will play AVIs if it has the needed codecs for the contained media.

Yes, but a search for "codec" is far more efficient than a search for "container format". A search for "avi" doesn't work at all because it's three letters long.
Moreover, there are several threads involving the word "codec" that go into a lengthy explanation of just what an avi is; hence, my recommendation to simply do a search for codec.
Which brings me to the question of why three-letter searches aren't allowed?

I wasn't responding to the issue of a search, I was simply clarifying for factual accuracy.
I do not know why short searches are failing; the admin control panel is set to search for two-letter words and longer. I have reported this to the server folks repeatedly. I know it has something to do with switching to a different search system in the back-end, but that's all I know.

OK, thanks. I'd always thought the search length restriction was some anti-bot/spider measure.

It's also worth noting that many files which aren't actually avi files find their way to having file names ending in .avi. This causes QT Player to give up, even if it would have been able to play the file with the right file name extension.
