of all things, a comm'l dvd of the b'way show pippin, which i bought for $20 refuses to be ripped by mac the ripper
it also plays weirdly, i.e not really at all on my mac (G5), but fine in a dvd player
does this ONE dvd, of all the dozens i've ripped, have some diff type of encryption thingy going?
any other way to rip it?
when i click go on mac the ripper it just does nothing
then if i try to look or change the settings (not that i would know what to do), it quits
weird...
thanks for any help

For future reference making a copy for a friend is, of course, illegal and contributes nothing to your question.
Check out the forums at www.ripdifferent.com. If the members there can't help you out then it's likely no one can.

Sometimes it's important for management to remind everyone (not just the people currently involved in a thread) that certain things are illegal and that MacNN won't support them. Things like making copies for a friend are indeed illegal, and these forums won't provide help for that. But we will help you with what we feel is legitimate "fair use" copying, such as backing up a commercially purchased DVD, or changing its format so that it can be viewed on the road.
Of course a tag like <butt covering></butt covering> would help with those disclaimers.

let me be as clear as i can:
all i am trying to do is make 50-100 copies of this movie so i can sell them on a street corner in greeenwich village for $10@. now you can not possibly think that is even remotely illegal or unethical

actually, is making a copy for a friend illegal? its not for commercial use and therefore isn't actively breaking copyright (in the UK at least). However over here we also don't have fair use so it could be argued that decrypting it is illegal

It's not that weird for open source reverse-engineered semi-legal software to fail every now and then. Have you tried any of the other dvd decrypting software on that disc?

Newer disks have the latest copy protection and it can get nasty. Using the beta of MTR can get around them.
Personally after 300ish DVD that I have used on it I have never been beat

re the "ethics" question, let me just say (original poster here) that the movie industry (and for that matter the record industry) has nothing to worry about w/me. they WISH all their customers were like me. anything i DL "illegally" (music), if i end up liking it, i BUY THE CD, and, subsequent CD's from the artist. as for movies, any copy i make, even if it is for a friend, would only ever be given to someone who would never ever buy it on their own, and i would never ever spend the $$ to buy them one. SO... the entertainment industry does not have ME as a problem. there ARE people out there who do not behave as i do, but i am not them. just thought i would defend myself. no company is losing any money on my account, and in fact, some are gaining
thanks all

The U.S. FBI Warning on DVDs points out that copyright infringement with or without financial gain is still infringement. I'm sure the agents of copyright holders everywhere would argue that making a copy for someone else means that that someone else will be less likely (not at all likely) to purchase his own copy, and thus deprives the copyright owner of a sale-and they'd be right. Fair use is just that-fair to everyone. Making a copy for anyone else is not fair use.

1. It's important to remember that while MacNN cannot condone piracy, some uses are permissible, even within U.S. law. I do not believe that it is legal to copy entire films for friends here, but a clip from it might be.
2. We really need to remember, before we start attacking, accusing, or lecturing about U.S. copyright law that not all MacNN members live in the U.S. In Switzerland, for example, copying even for non-personal use is permitted, and even downloading MP3s of copyrighted material is entirely legal.
I say this simply because I've seen too much insta-pontificating any time anyone here talks about anything that may possibly be piracy. Blatant piracy is clearly off-limits, but in gray areas, we need to be careful before making accusations.

FWIW, I've found that MTR can be a little "moody" with certain discs. A disc that would freak the program out one day might be scanned and ripped with no problems some other time.
