Is it possible to do this? I have a Kodak DX 6490 and would like to mount the camera on the desktop to add some pictures to the SD Card. I know I could get a card reader, but I want to try it this way first without spending money.
thanks

Do you have a cable for the camera? I assume you have tried plugging it in? Usually on the camera settings menu there is an option to have it behave either as a camera or as a hard drive - set it to drive, and then it should pop up as an external drive in OS X.

Yeah, I do have a cable and a dock for it (it came with the dock). I searched all of the camera's settings area and find no place there to change it to a hard drive. The only thing close is to switch to the Internal memory or use the memory card, looks like I need to get a memory card reader.
Thanks for the help though!

So what happens when you plug it into the Mac using the cable?

It launches iPhoto, that is it. I have checked to see if I can change any preferences for when attaching a camera, but don't find anything in system prefs or in iPhoto's.

Your camera might support "USB Mass Storage", which will allow it to mount on the desktop. If it's set to PTP ("Picture Transfer Protocol"), or if it only has that mode, then it won't mount.

None of the relevant settings are on the Mac.

OK, my camera must only have PTP mode, so no go. Guess I have to go and get a card reader. I was reading on the Apple discussion boards that some readers don't work with 10.4, anyone here have any problems before I buy one?!?!
Thanks Tooki! (sorry about the sig thing!)

The Canon cameras I've used are the same way.

Get a SanDisk card reader (I have the 12-in-1) and it'll work without any setup (even on Windows, so they claim).

Use a card reader. They are very inexpensive and will do what you want.

Only very old readers that weren't completely USB Mass Storage compliant stopped working. A proper reader, such as the SanDisk models, work great.
