I opened some digital photos with GraphicConverter and it created thumbnails for all the photos in the folder. I figured out how to keep GC from creating thumbnails via a preference panel.

However now I cannot get rid of the thumbnails. I've deleted the resource fork and the thumbnails are still there. I've verified that the file has no resource fork and tried deleting the thumbnail with GC and another application but can't get rid of the thumbnails.

Any ideas on how to get rid of them?

Thanks,
Doug

Would associating the offending files with Preview give them the generic picture icon?

Good suggestion but it didn't work. I tried associating it with several different apps but the dreaded thumbnail remains. I even tried to paste the generic icon over the thumbnail and that didn't work either.

Open to more suggestions.

SmallImage 2 removes thumbnails. Not sure if that's what you're looking for....

GrimRipperCM strips the whole resource fork off files, which might be what you are looking for in this case.

I thought that thumbnail data was always and exclusively stored in the resource fork.

You're not looking at the files in icon view with previews enabled, are you?

I have used both GrimRipperCM and GC to strip out the resource fork. There is no resource fork in the files but the thumbnail is still there.

I changed the GC preference to 'preview always temporary'. That works fine but I can't get rid of the thumbnails that were created before I changed the preference. The thumbnails are just there.

There are two kind of thumbnails. One kind is the custom icon in the resource fork, the other kind is the Finders on the fly created icon preview if you turn that on the in the respective folder's view options.

Thank you, thank you. Problem solved. I don't know how preview icon got checked in the finder but all is OK now. Thank you again.
