Hi all,

I bought a new MacBook a couple of months ago and couldn't be happier, except that I am having trouble downloading Windows Media Player for Mac OS X. Has anyone else had this problem? I am doing a Google search for Windows Media Player and that takes me to the correct websites but everytime I download I just get an icon looking like a piece of paper, and when I double click on it it just says the computer doesn't recognise any application it can use to open the file.

The same thing happens when you try to download Windows Media Player onto the iBook G4, maybe the file is corrupt?

Also, does anyone know what is the best way to clean the part around the mouse under the keyboard as my MacBook has a tiny bit of discoloration! Any particular products I should be using?

I tried to install flip4mac today on my MBP and as it was about to install it came up that it doesn't support the intel based machines.

Maybe I was trying to install an earlier version of it or something...not sure.

The flip4mac universal binary has not been released… yet.

Apparently it's in late Beta testing and due for release Real Soon Now:

Click the "Download Now" button and save it to your desktop, then run it. Have you already tried this and had problems?

yeah, this is the link I've been using. When I download it automatically saves to my desktop but the icon looks like a piece of paper, and when I click on that icon it just says the computer doesn't recognise any application with which to open the file.

Flip4Mac Universal Binary Beta was available for a short while not too long ago. They have removed the download and are saying that the release is coming soon.

In my experience there are some WMV files that I can only play back with WM Player - VLC will only play the audio track.

See, these are the kind of helpful and supportive responses that give the Mac community such a great reputation. *sigh*

Kind of related mac-n00b question. How do I delete Flip4Mac? Just drag the Flip4Mac icon in my apps folder to the trash? Will Quicktime go nuts if I do this?

I installed the PowerPC version onto my Macbook by running the installer in Rosetta. It works...just really slow.

The Flip4Mac folder should contain an uninstaller - you just need to run this to fully delete Flip4Mac from your system.

Alternatively you can manually uninstall using the following method (from the Flip4Mac website):

How to Uninstall Flip4Mac
Our next release, due to be available in January, will include an uninstall feature. In the meantime, if you need to uninstall Flip4Mac, you can do so using the following steps: Spotlight "Flip4Mac" and "Telestream" and remove all of the items identified. In addition, Spotlight and remove: WMV Player.prefPane WMV Player (in Apps Folder) By doing the above, you will remove the following: Flip4Mac WMV Import.component Flip4Mac WMV Plugin.plugin Flip4Mac Plugin.webplugin WmvPlayer.prefPane Flip4Mac WMV Player Installer.pkg (in Receipts Folder) net.telestream.wmv.import.plist net.telestream.wmv.export.plist net.telestream.wmv.plugin.plist WMV Player (in Applications Folder) Flip4Mac WMV Export.component Flip4Mac WMV Export Installer.pkg (in Receipts Folder) net.telestream.wmv.export.plist Contact support@flip4mac.com if you have any trouble or need additional help.

Just FYI, as the new MacBooks don't come with Stuffit Expander, you can find it here: http://www.stuffit.com/mac/expander/download.html (free)

Well since this appearing to be the Mac-newbie-question-thread,.... it's been mentioned that some apps you can just delete, and some have an uninstaller... and there are some apps that you can just drag it into the applications folder and some you have to use an installer....

HOW do you distinguish between how you install/uninstall applications in Mac OS X?

If the app has a folder in "Applications" there's probably an uninstaller there. If just the app is shown there or there's no uninstaller in the app folder, you can just drag the app (or app's folder) to the trash and empty the trash to delete.

Because Flip4Mac puts things in different folders like the Preferences Panes and QuickTime Plugins they're using (or will be?) an uninstaller. In most cases that isn't necessary.
