So here's the conclusion:
On a brand new MacBook Pro, 1 GB of RAM is no where near enough for Aperture (1.1.2).

Agreed? :>

And this surprises you?

1GB of RAM, by the way, is the minimum amount required.

2GB and a 2GHz processor are recommended.

i disagree, it ran fine on my old 15mbp and in runs fine on this 17mbp which also has one gig ram.

most of the time it runs well enough for me to be running a number of other programs at the same time. what hogs my ram is old games running under roseatta. that **** eats me alive but aperture is no big deal.

well that said my library is only about 2thousand images all of them 1-4mb jpeg files as my camera sadly does not do raw.
Computers:
Macbook Pro: 17in, 2.16Ghz, 120GB HD, 1.5 GB ram.
iBook G4: 1.07Ghz, 60GB HD, 756mb ram (on sale for parts)

That might explain a thing or two. My library is almost exclusively RAWs

I totally agree. On my Macbook Pro (with 2GB RAM), Aperture uses around 500-800MB of physical RAM.

Also remember that on an Intel Mac, any apps running in Rosetta need a ton more RAM, because the Rosetta emulator itself needs RAM, plus the RAM needed by the PPC app. So 1GB on an Intel Mac is far less, in effect, than 1GB on a PPC Mac if Rosetta is being used.

^^^ Just to be clear, Aperture is universal. But yeah, if you're running Photoshop in the background...

Agreed. 2 GB recommended. (I can bring my iMac G5 2.0 to its knees with 1.5 GB running Aperture, even if I just have Safari & Mail running in the background.)
