Is there a simple app out there that locks my screen with a password of my choice? I used to use DeskShade+ But then discovered it could easily be defeated by f11 or 'show desktop'

I use WinSwitch and assigned Command+F8 to do a sort of fast user switch to the login window with the cube animation and I can retype in my password when I get back to the computer.

There's also Locker, a Dashboard widget. Works much the same way.

You could just put a password on your user account, and then set it up in sys prefs to ask for a password when the computer wakes from sleep or when the screen saver is cancelled.
Or, if you have an Intel Mac w/remote, you could use ialertu , an app that lets you lock the screen with your remote

Did you not see the picture?
Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Keychain Access
View the application's preferences and you'll see the above to add the lock icon to your menu bar.

Darn, I was going to suggest DeskShade but that stinks that it can be bypassed that easily...

Ooh, that's beautiful! Click on the Dashboard icon in the Dock, double-click the Lock icon, and voila - insta-lock! Thanks

Nifty app, wish I could put that in my dock for one-click access. Any chances of that?

Ahah, figured out a good method! You can put your machine into Widget developer's mode, which allows you to have Widgets present on the desktop. You can't add them to the Dock, but you can position them wherever you want. They will also overlap the Dock and any visible windows, so the Lock icon will always be on top waiting for you. I placed it in the lower right-hand corner next the trash can. Now all I have to do is double-click the Lock icon and my computer does the cube effect and goes to the login screen (without logging out, of course). Very nice! The trick is available here:

Odd, didn't see the picture from work. See it now. I tried it. I see the Lock icon, and a menu choice for "Lock Screen" choice, but selecting it does nothing.
Any ideas?

Good news everyone! I downloaded the newest version of Deskshade just for the hell of it, expecting it to still be easily defeated by f11, but it seemed to fix this problem amongst others and also added a bunch of otehr cool features. I highly recommend this program:
