Okay.. part of my job involves entering data into filemaker pro, 5.5 i believe... I have to enter schools.. like 'university of san jose' or 'columbus college of art and design'. I'm getting sick of typing that **** out all the time. Is there a way to slim this down, by using the F keys or something to represent differnet schools? There are only like 10 schools, but I hate typing them out each time.

Why not define a valuelist? Enter all the schools you want into the valuelist, then use the drop down menu/list that provides.

Because the database already has like 1000 entries in text. If I made a drop down menu I'd have to go through each one and change it somehow, and I can't remember what each one was, so I'd hav to go through over 1000 folders of information... like.. REAL LIFE folders.

If I understand you correctly, that's not true. You can instigate a drop down list for your 10 institutions and any previous data remains untouched. You can have 'Edit' and 'Other' options if you need the occasional other institution. This is clearly the best approach to solve your problem.

That is correct, it will not affect data already entered.

Indeed. In FMP, a Value List still stores a text value for each record. The list itself only serves to enter the value more quickly.

It would also be easy to use a calculation field to allow the entry to be done via a pure entry field (e.g. with 2-letter abbreviations) but expand into the full name in a different field.
