Why don't you just use VLC to watch those clips?

First of all, yes VLC is the best solution.
Second of all, no one will know what to recommend unless you tell us what you've tried already. Saying "I've tried some things that didn't work" is always always worse than saying nothing at all.
Third, just installing the divx.com component will solve 90% of your problems. Installing the ac3 and xvid delegate components (if they're back from 404) will solve 90% of the rest.

hi, thakns for the thoughts/advice
sometimes avi clips won't play w/sound even in VLC. i DID try that
ok, the one that worked for a while and then now doesnt', even w/the newest version is divxDoctor II
i also DL'd DivX converter and that didn't work either; and i don't think FFMPEG is for simple avi-->QT operations
uncle skel-- is there a link/site where i can download/get those 3 components you mention?
thanks again all

Do you have a sample file? Some files just won't play, but in general VLC will play them if they will. If you can provide a sample, at least I can tell you why.

Divx Doctor II has been obsolete for quite a while now. The other tools are all more robust.

What exactly is that?
Why didn't you try the divx.com component to play divx files? It's free.

No, it's not.

www.insaneness.com but it's been broken for a long time.
