Install Trillian Pro ($25) on the Windows computer. Trillian connects to the AIM network (and every other as well) and offers a much higher video resolution than the AIM client does.

This is the only cross platform solution that I'm aware of.

I use AIM video with several Windows users, with me running iChat. It works. Some AIM Triton versions have problems connecting to other clients, but the stable "AIM Classic" 5.9 release works great.

Yahoo messenger also has video, though it has no audio, and has a low frame rate.

There's also a program called iVisit, and Skype will soon be offering video on the Mac. On Windows, MSN offers video, which can be connected to using the third-party client Mercury.

So yeah, you have tons of options. If they don't work, it's probably the PC's fault!

Have you seen the AIM side of an iChat conference?

Nope. On the iChat side, though, I've found that the quality varies wildly by user. Some have reasonably good video, others have absolute crap. From what I am told, the AIM user's incoming video looks comparable.

If Trillian has substantially superior video quality, then it would definitely be worth it. What I was disputing is your claim that "This is the only cross platform solution that I'm aware of." You clearly knew of AIM, and probably of others.

The only thing I've managed to get to work was iChat + AIM 5.9. I haven't seen the AIM side of it, but my friend seemed impressed enough with it.

Ah. Gotcha. I should have said that Trillian was the only acceptable cross platform solution that I was aware of.

For AIM I wasn't able to increase the resolution size beyond that of a thumbnail and had found similar criticisms of AIM. I had forgotten about Mercury until I saw your post. When I last played with Mercury, it was just introducing video conferencing and was quite buggy ... likely the reason I forgot about it.

Just a note: it has been just over a year since I last looked into the options for cross platform video conferencing. Last time I looked, there was too much effort required on the Windows side and I ended up just using a Windows box to video conference with my parent's Windows box through MSN Messenger.

EDIT: Looks like the AIM side of the equation has been improved since I last looked at it

That wasn't my experience. AIM Trillian didn't work, but AIM 5.9 did.
