Songs in external HD won't show in itunes library

	My computer crashed and fortunately I had my itunes backed up to an external HD (bootable volume.) I tried changing my location to play music directly from the external HD and a message shows the music is being added to the library. However, when it's done, it only shows a couple songs and some ipod transmitter stations. I tried to drag the music into the library but that doesn't work either. Any ideas? [Note: I tried this in both itunes 4.7 and 6.04 but no luck with either]
