Does anyone know of a shareware/freeware program that would read the HD movie stream (I don't need any editing capabilities)?
I've been in Hawaii this summer with my G4 Powerbook (12", 1.33ghz) and just bought a Sony HD camcorder. I didn't have any intention of doing this when I left Canada in May. I don't have iMovie or iMovie HD loaded on the machine since I've never owned a camcorder or ever needed to edit movies. Anyway, I would like to view the movies I've shot and save them on the hard drive but have no way to do it. I don't want to buy another copy of iLife for just 2 weeks.

Has anyone tried MPEG Streamclip. It seems that this will do what I want. Their readme file says:
MPEG Streamclip is also compatible with MPEG-2 devices supported by DVHSCap and VirtualDVHS (free applications available from Apple as part of the FireWire SDK for developers); namely, the Sony IP7/MicroMV, the Sony HDR-FX1....If you have one of these devices, please connect it to the FireWire, use DVHSCap or VirtualDVHS (whichever works better) to capture the M2T file, then use MPEG Streamclip to convert the M2T file into a more useful format.
My camera is the Sony HDR-HC3 which uses the same recording file system as the HDR-FX1, so should work??

Has anyone used DVHSCap? How do you use it?

I haven't looked into whether there are any free options (there probably are), but you can do this with Quicktime Player (I have the pro version, so you may need to buy that). In the preferences under the "Recording" panel you can select the video and audio source (I assume your camera connects via firewire), quality and destination.

What format is the video in? VLC can play back broadcast HDTV files in transport stream format (.ts).

You are right, you have to upgrade to Pro, which I did. However, Pro will not import HD video. It will only recognize the camcorder through firewire if it is set to export DV but not if it is set to export HDV.

The camera puts out MPEG2 over Firewire.
