As is usually the case after a few hours of browing with Safari - usually with just one window or tab open - the memory usage is outrageous. I'm at 391 MB of real memory and 848 MB of virtual memory. This isn't a one shot deal - this has happened before, and I've gotten massive pageouts from it as well, the only time I get pageouts or am low on free RAM.

What gives, and is there a remedy? Firefox usually uses between 100-200 MB of RAM, often in the middle of that range , which is far better than 371. I haven't tried Opera in awhile to see what that uses.

Also, is there a way to force Safari to open links in a new tab instead of a new window (like in FF 1.5+) ?

OS X 10.4.7
1.33 ghz G4
1 GB RAM
ATI Radeon 9200

it happens to the best of us. I've tried other browsers but still prefer safari with a memory leak over anything else. I've grown accustomed to quitting and reopening it every couple of hours. Any prog will use a lot of ram when left open for a while. some more than others. In safari's case a lot more than others.

Although I tend to agree with you, having long been a Safari user... I have recently switched over to Camino v1.0.2 for all my major browsing needs... it's a lot quicker and doesn't seem to have the same memory problems...

Horses for courses I guess...
