I am trying to copy a dvd to my hard drive. I know there are programs like Hand Brake which let me do this, but what I am trying to do is copy the entire DVD, including the menus and all the features, so my hard disk.

What I want to do is be able to copy the entire contents of a DVD to my hard drive and be able to watch that DVD and have access to its features in Apple's DVD Player or a similar program WITHOUT having to have the disk in the drive. I want to keep the menu's intact and be able to use them for navigation, not just rip the movie.

And I am talking about a DVD which I legally own the rights to the DVD and the content on the dvd. My thought is this would help me when I am giving presentations to clients on my laptop. No load times or battery loss from the spinning of the disk.

Can this be done?

Thanks for any feedback!

I don't know what software on OSX can do the ripping that way (it can be done, Windows apps do it), but I know you can play the VIDEO_TS folder (what you'll get when you rip a complete DVD) with VLC.

The manual explains it best, but you rip the whole DVD. It will play just like the actual DVD in DVD Player if you do that.

Hey - sorry, I don't see it

I've extracted the whole disk and the folder is on my desktop that contain the Audio and Video TS folders. I opened DVD Player, but can't get the app to open the folders.

Toast can save a disk image instead of burning a copy. Then, you mount the disk image and you will have it on the desktop as if you insterted it in the DVD slot. Complete menus an all.

In DVD Player, you just choose the VIDEO_TS folder in the "Open DVD Media" dialog. Then you hit play on the controller. You don't actually select a specific file.

Exactly, visual evidence… please note this is a DVD Movie that came in two discs:

opening the VIDEO_TS movie folder ripped from the DVD Movie disc…

opening the VIDEO_TS extras folder ripped from the DVD Extras disc…

It is the same thing to do if the movie fits in just one single disc, just choose and then open the VIDEO_TS folder and DVD Player'll play it once you have ripped it with MacTheRipper.
