According to the people who produced GraphicConverter, it is possible to use that app to edit icons, but they do not explain how to open the icon files with GraphicConverter. How do you open an icon file with a graphics editor?

The problem with that is that one gets a tiny image with poor resolution. I was able to screen capture the image and drop that on a blank field, but I thought there had to be a better way.

There is a better way.

I meant, drag the file onto Graphic Converter's icon.

When I do it, I get a 128x128 pixel image at screen resolution. Which is the maximum number of pixels stored in an *.icns file, anyway.

Click here for a demonstration video.

It's a possibility you're not actually dealing with an *.icns file, though. For example, you may be trying to edit something like a preview icon stored in a file's resource fork, or something.

Edit: If it's a folder icon, you could get Iconverter (free), drag the folder onto it, and extract the proper *.icns file for further editing.

Is there any way to take a folder's icon and stick another image on top of the middle of it?

Folder Icon X
Folder Icon Maker (Edit: Archive corrupt.)
Viou

There's another app that offered some fancier options like encircling the folder with multiple images and $hit like that, but I've forgotten what it's called. (Edit: Can Combine Icons)

(Edit: Just found iCoco. Interesting.)

Thanks for the suggestions, but those are all PPC, and my Mac has an Intel CPU.

They should still run on your Intel Mac, it'll just use the built-in Rosetta PPC emulation technology.
