Here's my feature request for Mail that I'll be sending to Apple:

Message Labels

In other mail clients, such as Thunderbird, there is a Label feature that allows users to color code messages according to their importance. I would love to see this feature included in the new version of Mail.

MailTags is nice, but the good thing about labels in Thunderbird is that they color the messages within the list of messages. That's what I really want.

MailTags right now allows you to set different priorities for emails. You can then make a rule to change the background color based on the priority.

The rub is that the rules don't run automatically after you change a priority - so you either have to trigger it or set an applescript to do it every so often. Not ideal, but maybe a stop-gap.

Another option would be to set up Smart folders for each priority level. This would happen automatically and you wouldn't have to worry about whether or not the rules had been run.
