So, Mozilla's putting out a supposedly Cocoa rendition of Firefox:

http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.o.../latest-trunk/

I'm on a work PC, so I can't check it out yet; post your results if you try it, people.

I just grabbed it. It looks much the same as previous versions of Firefox but I have noticed that the system spell checker is working as I type this. I don't recall whether this worked before in Firefox.

Downloading pages seems faster than Safari.

Good to see that they are going to use Cocoa in future.

No, spell check is not a part of the regular FireFox.

So is this just a side project, or is FireFox for the Mac converting over to Cocoa officially?

I think it'll transition over. However, I'm not sure some services (built-in OS X dictionary, for example) will ever work.

It's impressive. Page loads are occasionally a little jerky, but I'm liking it better than the real Firefox so far.

Looks more OS X like, it is still not the built in Cocoa NSTextView. Perhaps with Leopard... (Carbon gets the ability to use the built in NSViews)

Camino is a separate Gecko-based browser. This is Firefox implemented in Cocoa. It's not supported yet, but it looks like it's meant to support Firefox plugins and all that as well.

It'll be switching over to Cocoa officially for 3.0, which (last I checked) was scheduled for release in Q1 2007. Hopefully this won't make Camino obsolete... I <3 that little browser. Though I'd be more than happy to switch back to Ff if they get it right.
