i cant find any freeware that would allow me to do this.

You will need to pay for it. Popcorn, by Roxio, is one such example.

RipDifferent.com is a good place to read reviews about all the different applications capable of doing this for you.

ok i bought popcorn and ripped a movie and now it saysd that the video ts folder can not be compressed.
