Delete your ~/Library/Caches/Safari folder and the History and Download files, and the Icons folder from the ~/Library/Safari folder.

Well that's everything Safari generates except its preference file. So you could delete that too.

go to your 'Home' folder -> 'Library' -> 'Preferences' and delete this item:

com.apple.Safari.plist

Remove any plugins or other Safari hacks you have installed.

Some use to be installed here:

your Home folder --> Library --> InputManagers folder

What kind of stuff you have there?

I don't think it would be worth to pay for Apple Care to solve this, maybe someone with a better knowledge about Safari can post here sooner than later.

You can always install Safari again from the Mac OS X install discs.

You can also try to purgue all Safari info, basically a Reset as you was trying to do… but since it locks up, download this app 'AfterSurf'

afterSurf 1.7 - MacUpdate

do a clic on Safari (as browser) and then 'Purge all' as option, as follows:

clic on 'Clean' and check out if that helps. It is basically a way to Reset Safari without opening Safari, in fact you have to have it closed.

If nothing helps and until you can get a working Safari again, you could download an alternative browser based on WebKit, like Shiira, look for the 1.2.2. version here

Shiira Project

Or you could give Camino a try, it is also a nice browser,

Camino - Mozilla power, Mac style.

Good luck!.

You could also try one of the WebKit nightlies (nightly.webkit.org) which not only gives you greater speed and compatibility, but uses all of your existing Safari files. It will also tell you if you have any Safari hacks installed.

Sounds like a similar problem that's been discussed before a couple of months ago. I had the same problem. I ended up simply downloading another browser (opera in my case) and using that instead while I tried to figure out what was happening with Safari.

There are lots of alternative browsers - you don't have to use Safari.
