I am rather confused someone please help...Does QuickTime player play avi codecs? Because I thought that it didn't so I got DivX player. But is Divx a type of .avi codec? I have been having problmes lately with getting videos to play and certain players. Someone PLEASE HELP...is there an easy way to end my confusion??? Can I get like one or two players to satisfy my needs, and if so which ones play the most codecs? Which players play xvid codecs?

vlc and mplayer can play most everything except very recent windows media films. mplayer is just getting support for .wmv, however.

for conversion, ffmpegX is a snap to use.

.avi is not a codec, it's a so-called container file format. So is the QuickTime .mov format. In either case, the container file can hold media in any of a myriad of formats and codecs. QuickTime has no problem with .avi containers, but it doesn't support many of the codecs often used by Windows Media.

Two solutions exist: either use a player that does support the codecs you need (e.g. VLC and Mplayer, etc), or make QuickTime understand the codec via a plugin (e.g. http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/codec/ ).
