On MS Picture It! I could download a photo off the Internet, add words over it using a text box, and save it then upload it to the Internet again.

So far, doesn't seem like I can that with iPhoto. Or can I?

If not, any programs that do the same thing, Please advise!

No, you can't do it in iPhoto. Applications you can do this with include:

Pages, OmniGraffle, Photoshop, Illustrator, GraphicConverter

GraphicConverter and Photoshop (Elements) edit pixel based pictures. These would work very well for what you want to do. Or you do it in Pages and press ⌘⇧4 to make a screenshot of the picture. You can then upload the resulting PNG to the Internet or convert it into JPEG with Preview. Awkward, but if you'd do it only once it would work and save you from purchasing something.

You can also search VersionTracker and MacUpdate for other software that can do this. Maybe there is something available for free.

TET I used your advice with Pages and it worked GREAT thank you, what a very cool feature that is.

One more question---- what if I want to use APPLE+SHIFT+4 to capture an image that is larger than the screen? I cant seem to make it work, or I end up capturing an image that is cropped off.

Where do you find images that are larger than your screen? On the web? Have you tried just dragging them from the browser?

Erik what I have been doing is taking images off the browser using a Workflow, downloading them to iPhoto in the process, using the Media tool in Pages to locate them in iPhoto and placing them on the Pages document, adding text and other photos, then capturing that image using the technique above.

Then I upload the newly created image on Photobucket.com. and transfer it to a website, unfortunately the only drawback is that the size of the new image is a little too small (Photobucket automatically downsizes all images because I think a lot of people use Photobucket for Avatars and signature shots on Message Boards).

My problem is when I try the Apple+Shift+4 over my newly created image on Pages, the image itself is larger than the computer screen, so I can only capture what is on my actual screen, I cant figure a way to "scroll down" as I'm doing the capture so I can snag the whole deal. As a matter of fact, the first time I tried this, I captured the top 2/3 of the image and my bottom toolbar, all in one image!

As for clicking and dragging images off the browser, I cant seem to find a way to get the browser small enough where I can do that. In other words the broswer takes over my entire screen, and I can click and drag, but have nowhere for my clicked image to go.

Hope that makes sense.

Dragging images from your browser should be easy. When you have the image on-screen you can just drag it onto the desktop or indeed directly onto the iPhoto icon in your Dock. You should be able to see some the desktop next to the Dock.

I think I would suggest you change your workflow though. Are you using iPhoto to adjust the images at all? Instead of all this hassle with Pages, you can use a free app like Chocoflop to adjust the images, add text etc: ChocoFlop 0.45 - MacUpdate

Just use Exposé! That's exactly what it's made for. Drag the image and while still dragging it, press F9 if you want to drag the image to another open window or F11 to drag the image to the desktop

a) Dragging large pictures from a browser:

Don't make the browser window fullscreen. Leave some room so that you can see the program you want to drag to (Pages, iPhoto etc.) or the Desktop. And don't forget that you can use Exposé during drag and drop. Either the keyboard shortcuts or the screen corners. So if you don't see the target window right away you can always reveal it with Exposé.

b) Resizing the image:

If Photobucket downsizes the images anyway, you can work on smaller images to begin with. You can resize the image in Pages directly or in iPhoto beforehand.

c) Taking screenshots of something larger than the screen:

You can't. If you need to work on something larger you have to use GraphicConverter, Photoshop (Elements), the ChocoFlop monkeybrain suggest or another image editing program.

Not sure when Apple started bundling it, but "Comic Life", which came with my MacBook, lets you do the text field bit...
