Is there a free widget/utility that will check e-mail?

I am a fairly new Mac user having gotten my first one late last year. I'm now on my third (just kept upgrading) and I have gotten pretty familiar with using them. I have found equivalent apps for most everything I do in Windows except for this. Is there a small (FREE) app that will periodically check a POP3 e-mail account and tell me if there is new mail. If it could preview the mail that would be even better. There are a few in the Windows world and I rely on that functionality quite a bit. I've looked but I haven't found anything so far. Any pointers will be greatly appreciated. Much thanks.

1. Setup Mail with your pop3 account.
2. Bronson Beta - Mail.appetizer
3. Install Mail.Appetizer
4. Set Mail to check for new mail every few minutes.

Yeah, what's wrong with Mail?
Just keep it running with the window closed. You see in the Dock when new mail is available.

Seconded about Mail.appetizer… funny thing I was playing some QuickTime movies at full screen and even so I got the Mail.appetizer advice about new incoming e-mail.

Thanks for all the responses. Much appreciated. I tried Mail.appetizer and it pretty much does what I want. I tried the delete function and it didn't delete the message from my POP server. Did I configure something wrong or does it not do that. Thanks again.

For POP3 servers, Mail has to be set to either delete messages after download or keep messages for a certain period of time.

The setup I have working now is close but not perfect. I setup Mail to check the POP3 server every 5 mins and Mail.appetizer pops up any new messages in a windows periodically. That part works very well. I have Mail set to leave messages on the server since I still do the final collection (and then removal from the POP3 server) on my Windows box where I have a history of e-mails that goes back to 1994. However when a message pops up in Mail.appetizer that is spam or that I know I do not want to keep, I would like to be able to delete it over the POP3 server. Mail.appetizer does not seem to be able to do that. Not a huge deal but it would be nice if it could be configured to do so. It would be nice if it did not require Mail to be running but it does so I'll live with that. Thanks.
