THis might be a dumb question but I am going to ask it anyway. I am trying to get X11 installed so I can try the new open office and I dont know how. I tried dling the 43MB DL off Apple's website and it says something newer is already installed. I ran the install off the DVD's that came with my Macbook and I have to go through with the archive and erase option, I can uncheck everything else and leave the X11 checked. But will this really archive my current system and reinstall the base system again + X11? I just want to add X11 without touching anything else. Can anyone tell me specifally what needs to be done.
Thanks

How about installing X11 which is included on the OS X install CD?

I mentioned in my msg that selecting the X11 option goes along with the base system, I dont want to mess with the base install of OSX. I only want to install the X11 stuff I need. Anyone have any input?

That's incorrect. X11 has a separate checkbox and can be installed at any point without touching the rest of your OS X install. Just pop in the CD, look for the X11 installer package and double click. I'm not sure why you think it messes with your `base install'.

Sorry, Oreo, but Money69 is right. I am also trying to install X11 on my MacBook Pro and have run into the exact same problem.
When you start from the MacBook Pro install disks, you can indeed uncheck everything that it wants to install, with the exception of the system itself. This is completely grayed-out and can't be unchecked. I have been battling with this all day and can't find a workaround.

A few minutes after typing the above, I found the answer on Apple's forums ( Apple - Page Not Found.
Put in your MacBook Pro install DVD. Navigate to System->Installation->Packages and you will find a file called X11user.pkg. Double-click it and install.
Enjoy!

Please read Oreo's post again. He is correct.
Pop in the OS X cd - do not boot from it. do not run the main installer app.
scroll down, and you will see a X11 installer package, run that.
