i keep hearing about rosetta and it has something to do with the older macs. I've had my macbook for a few months now so please bear with me. what exactly is rosetta? is it something I want to avoid using? is it preinstalled on the computer?

i've noticed that some apps make my fans go crazy. in particular the other day, I was using divx player to watch a movie but it made my fans turn on the entire time, thus draining my battery faster than normal. does this have anything to do with the possibility that it wasn't a universal binary? but i am pretty sure that it was universal.

i also noticed that mapquest makes the fans kick on and a youtube also. any particular reasons for this?

You can check if an app is universal by clicking on it and choosing Get Info from the File menu. Dunno why Youtube or Mapquest would run your fans, though (although you should look at Google Maps instead of Mapquest - it's about 10 times better).

Next time the fans start going, open up Activity Monitor and see what process is using the most of your processors. That's the process that's probably responsible for the fans firing up.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!
