What is an Album Artist? My Coverart slideshow thing has individual albums cut up because they have different Album Artists. What is an Album Artist? Is this new?

I think the album artist is the one who compiled the album. That's not necessarily the same person that made the songs on the album.

A lot of songs these days have "featured artists". For instance, Janet Jackson has a new single out featuring Nelly. In iTunes the "Artist" tag for the song will show "Janet Jackson, Nelly" but the "Album Artist" tag will show "Janet Jackson". So on the album "Janet Jackson" will be the "Album Artist" on all the tracks, but the "Artist" may vary depending upon who appears on the individual tracks.

Anyone know how to get "Album Artist" populated with the "Artist" info for tracks imported from CDs (not downloaded from ITMS)? As it stands now they are all blank, but I want to start using this new feature. The thing is I don't want to do this one at a time but rather as a batch update.

The only problem is that the iPod does not utilize "Album Artist" at all. If one utilizes the "Artist" field to reflect the main artist and featured artists as intended, then there is no way to quickly locate the main artist on an album, and then select all or individual albums by that artist. Which in my case effectively renders the new "Album Artist" field useless.

PS: This is nearly as stupid as introducing playlist folders in iTunes and not having any sort of iPod support for the feature!

In addition to the "featured artist" concept, you could also use the Artist field to list individual band members and Album Artist to list the name of the band.
... of course, the browse pane only lists genre, artist, and album, not Album Artist. Hopefully enough feedback will be submitted so other browse-by options are available ("composer" would be handy, for example).

Just picked up this idea from the Apple Support forums. All Apple needs to do to make the "Album Artist" tag truly useful in iTunes is make the Artist column in the browser toggle between Artist and Album Artist when clicked. Then they need to add an option to browse by Album Artist to the iPod. Both of these can be done in the next point release to iTunes. If you agree please submit similar feedback to Apple ....

Doug (of Doug's Applescripts) has already released a script that will populate "Album Artist" with "Artist" info.
