Ever since day one of iTunes, Artists have been sorted by the first character in their name. Is there a way that iTunes can be made to sort names properly--so Jason Donovan is sorted under the D section and bands such as Dave Brubeck Quartet is sorted under B. I'd like to avoid the simpleton approach of entering artists like Jason Donovan as "Donovan, Jason").

is there an Applescript than can help accomplish this?

You do this by first asking this application-oriented question in the Applications forum. So I'm being nice and moving your thread there.

It's a little hard for an application to guess what is a person's name and what isn't. Of course it's easy with keywords like "The" for the application to know what to do with it. But How is iTunes supposed to know "Dave Brubeck Quartet" is any different from "Me First & the Gimmie Gimmies". I don't really think a script would be any better at guessing what are first names followed by last names unless you of course told it all the strings that were affected. Even then, that type of script really wouldn't do what you want in iTunes.

You could, theoretically, use the technique described here ("iTunes 5 artist sorting patch") to manually tell iTunes to ignore when sorting "Dave," and then to manually ignore "Jason," etc., but I imagine it could get kind of tedious.

Sorry but, you're missing my point. What I am asking is for a way to have iTunes *sort* in proper alphabetical order where names are sorted on last, first order. Also, for example, an artist like Elvis Costello & The Attractions is sorted correctly under the C (for Costello) instead of E.

No, I understood your point. If you read the link, you'll see that it shows you a work-around for telling iTunes to ignore words othen than just "the" when sorting. You could manually tell it to ignore "Elvis," and any other names that you cared to. But, like I said, it could get tedious.
