I'd never heard of "TalkBack" until a couple weeks ago when my daughter (who uses mostly FF) started having it appear, freeze her G4 iBook, etc.

I figured it was some weird educ. site she was accessing had downloaded something.

Finally I was using FF for browing Amazon and had the "TalkBack" experience... necessitating forced quit... and leaving me with a system in which printing/ previewing in several apps kills the app (incl. good ole TextEdit) ... and just now Finder died when I tried to open a window. And a lot of files on my desktop have been disappeared.

A search of the forums reveals only one MENTION even of TB.

Nobody else having trouble. I'm on 10.4.7; Daughter also on Tiger.

I have since trashed the talkback items in the FF support folder, but it hasn't cleared things up yet.

Had no one discovered the ~joys~ of TalkBack... and workarounds? I'm mighty gunshy about FF as a result.

Perhaps the fact that Firefox is crashing (and thus launching TalkBack), and the fact that TextEdit, Finder, etc. are also crashing or freezing, are both caused by the same underlying problem. Perhaps the hard disk is going south?

TalkBack appears when Firefox crashes. It's kind of like the built-in OS X "Crash Reporter" thing that offers to send a report to Apple.

It sounds like TalkBack is a symptom, not a cause of the problem. Try a clean profile in Firefox, repairing your disk in Disk Utility, etc.

After another restart, funkiness gone. FF hasn't crashed again.

Just a coincidence that two different Tiger systems hung while processing TalkBack?

Some sites it'll crash with, I use to have it crash with Macthemes.net when clicking on the archive links within the site and it would trigger it. Also depends on what extensions you have installed as well that some sites might not like.
