I uploaded a file from my dvd with HandBrake to an MP4 file with mpeg4 video and aac audio, how do i convert it to m4p? I tried replacing the mp4 with m4p and it still did play but it didn't protect the file because it imported straight into imovie and mpeg stream clip. Is there anyway to protect these files? Maybe a DRMI codec? thanks

You want to DRM your own files?

You can't do that.

no not DRM, just protect them, like an .m4p file thats protected so no one can import them to imovie or burn them with idvd

Simple solution: don't share it with anyone.

Quicktime (mov) has a flag to prevent editing (and importing), but it's just a flag, not encryption, so anything using the QT framework (Apple apps) will honor it, but anything using open source technologies won't (ffmpeg, vlc, mplayer, etc).

I don't know. It always struck me as a foolish thing to do, so I never investigated. But I know it's there somewhere. I bet QTPro could do it, and I'd be shocked if LiveStage Pro couldn't do it, but I don't know exactly how.

99.9% of people would never even consider doing it themselves. The rest don't know how, but aren't interested. This is the reason both that no one knows the answer and that no one has wasted time making software to allow consumers to do it.

You might be able to open a corporate relationship with MS or Apple for them to publish DRM versions for you, or maybe create your own DRM implementation (encrypting and decrypting and I suppose playing), but other than that the capability doesn't exist, mainly for the reason that there is no demand for it.

DRM doesn't just mean encrypting the files. DRM also requires the infrastructure to actually manage the rights. Managing user accounts, creating personalized files, verifying usage rights etc. pp. That's not feasible for a consumer.

If your friends upload your videos to Youtube even though you ask them not to, they are not your friends. Stop giving them your private videos. Give them your middle finger instead.
