NewsBin is an RSS reader that's Windows only (AFAIK) but there are many RSS readers for OS X. I like NetNewsWire Lite.

Yes. Most news sites (and many other sites) use RSS to publish their info, making it easy for users to keep up to date.

What your friend was talking about is Usenet binaries. And yes, it is basically used now for downloading pirated materials. In the early days it was (and actually still is) a text-based bulletin board system; the equivalent of today's web forums. A quick Google search will get you all the information you need.
FACT: Usenet binaries have absolutely nothing to do with RSS, and NewsBin Pro is NOT an RSS newsreader, it is a Usenet binaries downloader/reader.
Once you figure out the wonderful world of Usenet, I personally recommend Panic's "Unison" as a usenet binary downloader/reader. It is one of, if not the best binaries downloader out there. Better in almost every way than NewsBin, which is STRICTLY Windows only. Damn Windows-only developers.
Please people, check your facts before you give "advice" to people.

Huh. Page I looked at said RSS, so I assumed. Whatever. If you want news you want an RSS reader.

Now you know what happens when you assume.... and it's not "whatever". You gave someone the wrong information. Just admit you were wrong and move on.

Unison is very nice, but it can slow to a crawl if you visit large groups.
Another option is Pan which runs under X11. It requires a bit more work to install, but it's freeware. Both Pan and Unison use up lots of RAM on large groups, but I've found Pan to be faster. YMMV.
Overall, I still feel Newbin Pro is the best but use Pan most of the time because I want to avoid Windows whenever I can.
