Is it possible to allow more than one user on a particular Mac to edit/modify (not just subscribe to) an iCal calendar by shifting the relevant files out of the home (~/) directory and into the Users/Shared directory instead? That way, I would hope, my wife could modify the family calendar while she's logged in under her account.

I have a feeling that .Mac groups allow you to do this. Of course this means you have to get .Mac. I have never tried it myself.

It looks as if 10.5 could be your answer if not.

Sure, just create a symbolic link from your wife's calendar file location to yours, and make sure she has permission to write to the file in your account.

How do I do that, exactly? I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to UNIX.

Well, you could also try making an Alias (which is, I believe, the same thing but done through the GUI)

You can link entire directories or individual files, here is an example that will connect your calendar file and create a link of the same name in your wife's calendar directory:

sudo ln -s /path/to/your/calendarfile /path/to/your/wife's/calendardirectory/

Make sure that your wife can read and write to your calendar file when you are done... You may want to create a group that you and your wife are a part of, or if you want to open up the calendar files to anybody on that machine:

sudo chmod 777 /path/to/your/calendarfile

Actually, I think aliases like to particular files and move with those files when they change locations, where symbolic links are fixed to one location. But I'm not fully certain.

Yeah, symbolic links are fixed, you are right...
