ill be opening my new mac this friday and am very excited...

im pretty up to date with what i need to do to get it running, but i am wondering what other programs i should get off the bat for smooth sailing. here is a list of things i would like to have. please include where to find the software/freeware. thanks for being helpful!

support for windows audio and video files

a chat that combines aim and google talk

good web browser (camino?)

something to tell me vital system numbers (cpu usage, memory usage, hd usage, etc)

useful, reliable, and non-resource hogging weather client

support for windows office files

virtual desktop software

windows boot software

feel free to give me a heads up on wahtever else might be awesome to have. i also heard that ichat combines aim and google talk but if thats not true or if there is somethign better, let me know.

this mac is going to be used for virtually all walks of media editing and designing. i also plan to do light gaming on the windows partition and run my RC flight simulator from windows as well.

thanks, adam

You could always scroll up a bit and look at the thread called
Sticky: Your top 5 (or so) freeware/shareware apps for OS X?

Do I get points for referring two people to the same thread in 5 minutes? -Sigh-

Thanks people. SLPD, I looked through that thread but most of the names were without description, leaving me to leaf through dozens of progs and find out what they do.

If anyone has any more input, please let me know.

My iLap has arrived and my M-Audio DX4's are shipping. I am also planning on picking up the M-Audio 49 key Axiom midi keyboard.

You could look at the What application do I need to use... thread instead

You might also want to look at MacUpdate and VersionTracker

Good browser - Safari comes with the Mac, but if you want a power-user browser then either Firefox or OmniWeb.

Weather - as well as the Weather widget that comes with the OS, the third party Radar in Motion widget is worth having as well.

Messengers - try Mac Messenger Guide for information on the various clients available. Unfortunately, there currently isn't one über Messenger available for the Mac that can do-it-all™
