Hi Folks:

I've been looking into various apps to facilitate my note-taking, research, and crazy generation of ideas. I've used a variety of things and am pretty much resigned to the fact that one app is just not going to do it all. However, I like a few and I wonder if anybody here has had success with any of these:

1. VooDooPad. This is a truly cool program. Easy to use, I love the instant linking to store and relate sets of notes. Since I am an Academic, notes on one project can be related quite well to other notes, especially bibliographic data. So, the automatic linking of VooDooPad is wonderful. It is straightforward and I can keep it up and running all the time.

2. Journler is like Yojimbo. It lets you throw in everything at it. It is easy to use also. I like the fact that I can store plenty of stuff with it. For instance, Word docs., emails, images, etc. It is the case that sometimes I have different types of documents and files for one project. So Journler (or Yojimbo) seem good for that kind of organizing. It doesn't have the same wiki functionality of VooDooPad though.

3. MoinX is a fantastic version of the MoinMoin wiki, I can run it easily enough on the browser on a tab, it archives nicely, others can collaborate on it, etc. However, it won't do the swiss army knife thing as Yojimbo or Journler do. Still, this is an easy implementation of MoinMoin and I like it.

Whatever I end up using... I want good exporting options (XML , XHTML, etc.), and good importing. I want the ease of typing and connecting or linking easily to previous notes, ideas, and thus projects. I'd like to be able to share things with other users on my network, or at least to access it from home if I'm running it primarily on my office Mac. Right now I end up sending tons of stuff to myself as I rely on Mail for all my management of ideas, etc. I have yet to try OmniOutliner but that seems awesome for organizing my thoughts and tasks, not necessarily for notes and research.

Any folks experienced with MoinX? VooDooPad? Etc?

Thanks!

Also, checking out Mori, but frankly can't quite make up my mind about all of these. Why not combine them all?

Any insights you care to share about these Getting Things Done kind of apps?

Thanks,

N

I used Soho Notes, initially, but it was so horribly buggy that I switched to Yojimbo for my note/PDF collection. It's a great application, although admittedly without the bells and whistles of Soho Notes, and it works for me.

I also use OmniOutliner religiously, although I'm a recent convert to it.

I like VooDooPad, but because I work on three machines, it's a bit of a pain to keep it all on a flash drive.

Cheers

(I'm an academic, too, so I feel your pain)

I use MacJournal for everything. Didn't care for YoJimbo/Voodoo/etc, I just wanted something that kept everything seperated and orderly. Still can't get the hang of OO.

I own MJ and used to use it for everything, too. But then I started working on more than one Mac, and sync became critical. That's why I moved to Stickybrain/SOHO Notes—it allegedly synced. But that sync was so buggy that I abandoned it for Yojimbo, which syncs flawlessly.

And OO is the best thing in the world.

I would like to see some real world examples of OO in action. I'm just too retarded to get past making plain check lists or nested topics.

If anyone is interested in Mori you could go to this website vote for your favorite application and get a free copy (it costs like $27)

I'm very happy with KIT. I use it as a catchall for all of my inbound stuff that is either temporary or still unsorted, and I'm even starting to use it for more permanent things too. I used to use a single folder for this purpose to keep a clean desktop, but KIT's iTunes-like interface, color coding, and searchability have really been helpful.
