Hey all I have Motion 2 Academic Version and Final Cut 4.5 HD (not an academic version). I know I am eligible for an upgrade for 199 dollars for the latter, but I wanted to know if Motion 2 Academic Version is eligible for an upgrade also. If so then I don't want to send them my final cut CD. Thanks

I believe your question has already been answered here and here.

If you send Apple your FCP 4.5 disc and $199 payment, then the crossgrade will include Final Cut 5, Soundtrack Pro, DVD Studio Pro 4, and Motion 2.

So you will end up with 2 copies of Motion 2. The copy you currently own, plus the universal version included with the crossgrade.
I gotta have more cowbell.

Edit: The apple page does say that you can crossgrade with a Motion 2 disc. My personal version of Final Cut Studio is the Academic version, and I spoke with someone at Apple and they told me that I was still able to crossgrade with that.

Does that still apply to "upgrade" because with 'crossgrade' all you are getting is a universal version of Final Cut. Apart from that, I don't think there is any difference between Final Cut Pro Studio 5. 0 and Final Cut Pro Studio 5.1.

The only major difference is that Final Cut Studio 5.0 is currently at version 5.0.4 and will stay that way for good. The only way to get any future updates is to get the crossgrade.

I'm really not understanding your confusion here. You currently have Final Cut 4.5, and Motion 2. You don't want to get rid of your FCP 4.5 disc. So you can send in your Motion 2 disc along with $199 and get the Final Cut Studio crossgrade. And yes, an Academic version still qualifies for the crossgrade.

But seriously, if you have any more questions, you can call Apple and ask them directly. Their phone number is located on the Crossgrade form which can be downloaded here.

I think you are getting "crossgrade" and "upgrade" confused. Crossgrade is referring to the fact that if you have final cut studio 5.0 that you used on a Power Mac G5 and would now like to use it on the Mac Pro then you would have to pay LESS THAN 199 TO GET THE CROSSGRADE.....with the upgrade you pay 199 if you have final cut 4/4.5 or Motion 2...that still doesn't answer the question though...but just wanted to clear things out. Thanks

Thanks for the clarification. However, I believe that the original poster's question was answered originally in a different thread, had he read the official Apple page that was linked a few times.

I'll admit that for a while I was curious about whether or not the Academic version qualified, until I found the phone number on the downloadable form. The call took less than a minute.

Regardless of crossgrading or upgrading, the end result is getting the universal binary version of Final Cut Studio.

I have a question for anyone in this forum.

Do you know if you upgrade from the motion 2 software, what information you have enter when you receive your final cut crossgrade software?

Do you have enter the new final cut pro software PLS the motion 2 serial number?

I was going to upgrade from motion 2 upgrade version (from motion 1).

Does this mean I have to enter the motion 1 and motion 2 serial numbers before entering in the new final cut pro serial number?

Has anyone had experience installing final cut pro from a previous version of motion, soundtrack pro, or dvd studio pro? What type of information does the user interface console ask you to enter? THX.

When you get your upgrade discs, you will get a new serial number (for Final Cut Studio).

Since it's an upgrade, the installer may ask for your Motion 2 serial, but I'm not 100% sure about that.

....Hey, thanks for your quick reply!

But what I was going to ask you, is do you think it will ask for the Motion 1 and Motion 2 upgrade serial numbers? Seems to me you think that it just asks for Motion 2. I think what you're saying is more or less what Apple told me, but they didn't seem to really know either.

What's been your experience with the Apple cross-grade? Did you crossgrade from a previous version of one of the qualifying products? What did you have to do--enter the previous number of the qualifying product in addition to the Final Cut serial? Just curious.

Look forward to your reply. Will be ordering it sometime this week. THX again for your reply.

So far I've only had to do 2 types of crossgrading. With a 3rd on the way.

1. Crossgrade from existing retail versions of Final Cut Studio. (Required original FCS serial)
2. Crossgrade from existing upgrade version of Final Cut Studio. (Required original FCS serial as well as serials from previously upgraded versions of DVDSP 3, Motion 1, and Final Cut Pro HD)
3. Upgrade from existing retail version of Final Cut Pro 5 (not Studio). (new serial hasn't arrived yet)
