Messenger for Mac 6.0 makes it easy to take advantage of the full power of instant messaging, and it is a Universal application built to run on both PowerPC-based and Intel-based Macs. This update allows Messenger for Mac users to:

* Chat with Yahoo! Messenger contacts
* Add a status message that your personal contacts can see
* Share what you are listening to in iTunes with your personal contacts
* Create, send, and receive custom emoticons with personal contacts
* Send and receive custom animated emoticons with personal contacts
* Search for conversation histories using Spotlight
* Check the spelling in your instant messages

Mactopia: Download: Microsoft Messenger for Mac 6.0

No video support.

WARNING: It "upgrades" your conversation history. May take a *long* time, no way to cancel.

WARNING: It disabled automatically save conversation history, I had to manually reenable that in preferences.

WARNING: It changed my custom display picture to the default.

It seems slower. Yet another craptastic update from MBU. I'm overjoyed.

No one cares. Adium is far better for the basic stuff that MSN supports (even *gasp* custom emoticons). And aMSN and Mercury has had MSN webcam support for ages (though their clients are craptastic otherwise). But it goes to show that if open source hackers can get it working there's absolutely no reason the mothership itself shouldn't be able to.

There's lovely (HA!) "Windows Live" branding all over the place.

IIRC, MS Messenger is not a product of the Mac BU, which is pretty much only responsible for Office anymore.

I believe it is, tooki. Windows Media Player was the last non-MBU Mac product from MS, as far as I am aware.
What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

Ah, ok. I thought Messenger wasn't, either, since it and WMP seemed to share the same (crappy) design ethos.

I still prefer Adium, but what I do like in this app is

1) You can see emoticons in screen names
2) the emoticons use the standard keyboard shortcuts etc
3) The 'now playing iTunes thing works properly, unlike in Adium where I cant get it to work...

It's coming. A/V is in flux on the Windows side so they're waiting till that side is finalized before implementing it on the Mac.

You prefer an inferior product with Windows live branding to a lightweight client that does all that MSN does and more? And that's infinitely customizable to boot? Guess you are in your full right to roll your eyes, but the joke's on you.

*sigh* Well, some of us care what's doing on in the official client even if you don't. I've used 3rd party clients and simply wasn't happy with them.

The "Windows Live" branding can be changed by swapping out the .PNG's for the prior release's, you can also use Resourcerer to swap out the PICTs as well. That's what did. It's 'better with the butterfly'.

Mercury is tough to suss out for a 9 year old, so anything this upgrade does to keep her happy so I can keep enjoying my cup of tea is most welcome.

Anyone no longer seeing the custom font of the person you're chatting with ignored in this version? I can switch to their font and we both can see it, and I see their chosen color but no longer their chosen font.

I switch back to the prior release of messenger and everything shows up as it should.

I get what looks like Lucida Grande instead of their custom font.

Winks aren't in the official client either.

I am merely saying that out of the box Adium has a better user interface, is easier to use, has more features, faster file transfers and is more lightweight than the official client. It is in every respect an inferior product for their own protocol which is sad and shameful.

I'm usually highly critical of MSN Messenger updates, I mean one of them made dragging files to the window crash it every other time, then the one before this killed proxy support for certain configs that worked fine for years.

But this one seems a step in the right direction, its much faster, spell checking, custom emoticons. I mean its a bit late coming cos me and my friends changed to adium last year but its still pretty good as far as an ms app goes.

You'll never get webcams because that part of msn is code from logitech cos of some stupid bundle deal when they first put it in. MS are great at making mistakes like that (graphics chip in the xbox 1 was at a fixed price, so even after dropping like £200 off the price it was still costing them the same for the chips even though they were much cheaper to make. ****ing idiots)

I think they should change the branding to "Windows Lives!" That would lend a pop-culture conspiratorial air to the whole thing.

Why all the haters? For me, the custom smiles and the ability to actually see what other people's fonts are, among other compatibility things, made me switch from Adium. Granted, I don't have an iSight and such (since I have a Mac Mini), but Adium just doesn't have all the little nice touches that I really want.

Nope. I even downloaded a new copy and it still shows up without the brushed look. No idea how to explain it. I'm not using Shapeshifter or anything like that.

Really? How? I can't see custom smilies that people send me, nor can I see custom fonts. Example:

Someone sends me a smilie. It outputs in Adium as : lol : (without the spaces).

Someone uses a font, say, Courier, that's blue and bolded. I only see it in Lucida Grande, and only bolded.

Is there some setting I don't know about that changes it so it works flawlessly?

Okay, it finally works in Adium now.

However... how would I now be able to send a custom smilie?
